TRAFFIC calming measures are to be introduced on the road where schoolgirl Liberty Baker was killed last year.

New signs advising motorists to drive at 20mph will be installed in Curbridge Road in Witney and warning lights outside a primary school in the road will be upgraded so they flash during the morning and afternoon school runs.

The signs will be put up beside the warning lights at Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Primary School.

The 14-year-old was killed on June 30 last year when she was hit by a car driven by Robert Blackwell as she walked to Henry Box School.

Blackwell, 19, was jailed for four years at Oxford Crown Court on Thursday.

He had been travelling at an estimated 44mph in a 30mph zone when he started braking after hitting Liberty.

Her father Paul said: “I am pleased. It is a short-term measure but long-term I would like to see a blanket speed limit of 20mph in Curbridge Road.

“This is a step towards that.

“They will hopefully be installed before the end of the school year.”

The measures will be funded by Oxfordshire County Council.

Witney county councillor Laura Price asked the council to introduce the measures after Curbridge Road residents raised concerns about the safety of the road.

She said: “We will upgrade the flashing lights so they are programmable and they will work around school time, along with the advisory 20mph signs.

“I am very much behind Paul in looking at enforceable 20mph zones.”
