THE county has rallied round in support of Nepal following two devastating earthquakes in just over a fortnight.

As well as Cowley-based Oxfam’s efforts in the disaster area, and aid from its emergencies warehouse in Bicester, the people of Oxfordshire have raised thousands to support the cause.

The managing director of the Tree Hotel in Iffley, Kavita Pal, got in on the fundraising action after being inspired by her nine-year-old son.

A bank holiday onion bhaji sale in Summertown raised £690 and Mrs Pal’s performance in Sunday’s Town and Gown 10k run brought their total up to £1,835.

She said: “Watching the news about the earthquake I was very shaken by the plight of the people in Nepal.

“I made up my mind I had to do something and I was inspired by my son Taran Pal Bola saying that he wanted to do something to help.”

She added: “The generosity of the people in Summertown was overwhelming.”

The hotelier is hosting a wine tasting evening tonight with £10 of each booking going to the cause.

Oxford University student Ada Humphrey, who spent her gap year in Nepal, started a campaign after she heard aid wasn’t reaching rural areas.

The Keble College 19-year-old, along with friends, has raised more than £2,000.

Bicester shoppers showed their support by raising more than £1,000 in the space of four hours. Bicester Rotary Club, which collected the donations, added its own to raise £1,770.

The Oxford Branch of the Royal Green Jackets Regimental Association also chipped in with more than £200 to support veterans and widows hit by the disaster.
