CANDIDATES can stand for election for Banbury’s Grimsbury and Castle wards following the death of councillor Ann Bonner.

The former mayor of Banbury passed away at the age of 62 earlier this month after a short illness, having stayed at Katherine House Hospice for a short time.

Following her death a vacancy is available on both the Grimsbury and Castle wards, for Banbury Town Council and Cherwell District Council, and notices of election have now been published.

Mrs Bonner served as Conservative member for the Grimsbury and Castle ward on the district council since 2004, and began serving on the council ward in the same year. Candidates have until September 4 to submit nomination papers. If either poll is contested a by-election will take place on October 1.

The death of Mrs Bonner prompted a wave of tributes to the “tireless worker” and grandmother-of-two. Leader of Banbury Town Council Kieron Mallon said: “This by-election has automatically been called because of the sad death of councillor Ann Bonner who was a stalwart defender of the residents of the Grimsbury and Castle ward.”
