AN ELDERLY MAN trapped in his car on its side after a collision with another car has prompted the fire service to warn motorists to think carefully about driving in bad weather.

Firefighters had to use hydraulic cutting equipment to get the man out of the car after after the crash on the Aston to Witney Road at 3.58pm on Friday.

Two fire engines from Witney and one specialist rescue vehicle from Kidlington Fire Station attended.

The fire service said the rescue was "complicated" by the fact that the vehicle was on its side.

All Oxfordshire Fire and Rescue crews regularly practice rescuing people from cars and including what it calls "vehicles in difficult positions".

The service said firefighters used hydraulic cutting equipment and, working in partnership with the paramedics on scene, were able to release the man from his car as quickly as possible.

He was treated at the scene by South Central Ambulance Service and taken to hospital.

Fire service incident commander Chris Rowe warned: "This incident highlights the need for drivers to be aware of the changing weather conditions and the importance of wearing seat belts."
