FIREFIGHTERS were called to a cooker fire in Oxford late at night on Sunday.

Crews from Rewley Road Fire Station were sent to Sidney Street at about 10.50pm, where unattended cooking had caused a blaze.

Oxfordshire Fire and Rescue Service said the homeowner managed to stop the fire from spreading from the kitchen to the rest of the property without getting injured.

But a spokesman warned that residents were advised to wait for fire fighters to arrive in those circumstances.

Incident Commander Simon Piper added: "This could have been much worse and only highlights the need for working smoke alarms and the dangers of leaving cooking unattended.”
