MORE than £6.8m has been invested in flood prevention in Oxfordshire by the county council over the past ten years with more to come, according to the council leader.
Ian Hudspeth totted up the total after his council announced last month it had upped its contribution to the Oxford Flood Alleviation Scheme to £6.5m.
The county, lead flood authority for the area, contributes in the region of £600,000 each year to flood bunds, cluverts and new drains.
Mr Hudspeth said: “I am proud of the work that the county council has funded which has helped tackle and prevent the devastation that flooding can cause to our communities.
“What people may not realise is that Oxfordshire County Council has been contributing hundreds of thousands of pounds every year to protecting homes that could otherwise face disaster should there be extreme weather in the future.”
Next year’s program includes more drainage improvement schemes.
