YOUNSTERS at a school in North Leigh were incentivised to raise funds for Comic Relief with the prospect of seeing their teachers covered in gunge.

Teachers at the school were gunged in front of an audience of their pupils last Friday after they successfully raised more than £1,800.

The children set about raising funds after being told that more teachers would be gunged the more cash they managed to bring in.

Pupils had to raise £750 to see their headteacher Deborah Seccull take on the gunge, with markers along the way for other teachers.

One teacher with a reputation for being especially strict, Maria Cleal, was at the top end of the scale, with £1,000 needed for the gunging.

Ms Seccull said: “There was a real incentive for the fundraising and I think they thought it might not happen.

“The gunge was disgusting. We got some stuff for kids to have a fun bath and it was really slimy. It was surprisingly not very cold – but very unpleasant.

“It was interesting writing a risk assessment for the gunging.”

Pupils between the ages of five and 11 sold cakes and temporary tattoos, organised sponsored events and other activities to raise the funds for Comic Relief.

Ms Seccull said: “It was just amazing what they were able to do. We didn’t do anything to help them – they organised it all.”
