FOUNDATIONS for a new memorial in Witney marking a century since the end of the First World War were laid this week.
On Monday, workers took to The Leys to start work on the memorial ahead of this year’s remembrance events.
The new installation is intended to commemorate the end of war and the purchase of The Leys as a living memorial to those who gave their lives.
Witney Town Council has commissioned work by a local artist from Becky Paton Mosaics after successfully seeking funding from West Oxfordshire District Council
The memorial will consist of a central obelisk, some mosaic artwork, seating and a memorial garden.
Work can now begin with the unveiling of the memorial set to be part of the commemorations taking place on November 11 this year.
The memorial will be tied in with the council’s poppy mile initiative - which seeks to create a walkway of remembrance poppies through the town.
