A BEER company will raise a glass to its longest-serving head brewer when he retires later this month.

Jeff Drew, head brewer at Witney-based Wychwood Brewery, will step down from his post on June 29 after 16 years at the helm.

He was also head brewer at Ringwood Brewery, which is based in Hampshire. Both are owned by Marston’s Beer Company.

During his time working for the two companies, Mr Drew played an integral role in the success of popular beers including Hobgoblin.

Mr Drew said he was looking forward to retirement – but noted that it came with a tinge of regret.

He said: “It’s bitter sweet to be leaving.

“I have had some amazing years at Ringwood and Wychwood where I have made memories that I will truly look back on with joy.

“After 16 years I am sad to go, but I am excited to put my feet up and enjoy my retirement.”

Mr Drew honed his skills at Abingdon's Morland Brewery and took up the position of head brewer at Wychwood and Ringwood in 2002.

Since then he has split his time between the two breweries.

Mr Drew was the mastermind behind the creation of; Hobgoblin Gold, Ringwood Circadian, Oxford Gold and many other much-loved beers.

More recently he has been managing production and was involved with numerous marketing initiatives across both the breweries.

Colleagues praised Mr Drew’s passion and extensive knowledge which he applied to all of his work.

Over the years that work has included giving guided tours of the brewery to countless connoisseurs, among them some famous faces including David Cameron and Prince Charles.

Not to go out without a bang, the recent launch of ‘Hobgoblin IPA’ has marked a fitting end to Mr Drew’s career.

Managers at Marston’s Beer Company paid tribute to Mr Drew’s contribution.

Spokeswoman Charlotte Collins said: “Throughout this time as part of Marston’s, Jeff has worked on numerous projects and launches and created a real legacy which will be remembered.

“To honour his contribution to Marston’s and celebrate his retirement, we have made a parting gift of a personalised beer, presented by Jon Tilson and Maurice Walton.

"Both of them received their master brewer qualification while working under Jeff, so they ensured he was sent off in style with a pint in hand.”

Wychwood Brewery produces around 50,000 barrels of cask ale each year. It is is known for its fantastical label artwork, inspired by the myths of the Wychwood Forest.
