INTREPID Camera Club members have journeyed far and wide to send in their best snaps of signs this week.

From amusing notices on pubs to tantalising hints of times gone by, there was a deluge of entries with something to say.

Many submissions captured comedic signs and Ian White got things off to a flying start with his image of a tongue-in-cheek notice outside a pub in Weymouth, which warned children of their fate if found misbehaving.

A similarly amusing pub notice was a tempting offer in Birr, Ireland captured by Steve Fisher offering a free air guitar with every pint.

Unable to resist a pun, Chris Haynes commented there were ‘no strings attached’ when the image was shared on the Oxford Mail Camera Club Facebook page earlier this week.

Many entries focused on the remains of signs no longer in use.

We particularly liked the peeling door of a mechanics workshop in Jericho before it was redeveloped snapped by Darrell Godliman and a faded old notice at the corner of Gloucester Place in Witney taken by Marian Payne.

Other favourites included signs that reflected their surroundings, from brightly coloured signs on a fairground ride by Melissa Standbridge to a faded ‘private’ warning on a locked bridge by Mark Frederick Ridgway.

We love the contrasting moods evoked by the images - one of movement and crowds, the other stillness and solitude.

Another atmospheric photograph that caught our attention was Gail Girvan's black and white shot of a crow flying away from a car park sign.

Along with actual images of signs, there were some more figurative interpretations of the theme including a homeless sleeper snapped outside the Oxford New Theatre by Alan Flash Coleman which he called a ‘sign of the times’, and Roy Pyniger’s close-up image of a wasp described as a ‘sign of autumn’.

Next week’s theme is shadows.
