Golf professional and marathon man Allan Shutt is asking readers of this newspaper to set him a new fundraising challenge.

Allan, 49, is hoping to raise £3,000 for a new electric wheelchair for mother-of-two Cathy Ireland.

At the moment, Cathy, 36, who has spina bifida, pushes herself around her home town of Yeadon in a manual chair she has had since her twenties.

Allan became aware of the problems Cathy was having trying to get her children to and from school, collecting her shopping and reaching high shelves in the supermarket and offered to help.

He said: "I want a real challenge. I'm a golf professional and have taken part in many marathons for charity. I'm looking for something different to do that will help me raise money for Cathy.

"She is a wonderful woman who manages very well but a new chair will make life so much easier for her. Yeadon is very hilly and she pushes herself around every day going about her chores. It would be wonderful if we could actually help ease her load."

Cathy, from Raywood Close, Yeadon, is being offered a replacement electric wheelchair on the NHS.

But at 4ft 5ins the model she will receive will not enable her to reach supermarket shelves or overhead cupboards at her home.

When Allan heard of her difficulties he contacted Guiseley Mobility who offered to give her a modified chair at a special price.

Cathy, who has two children, Heather, nine, and Benjamin, six, said: "I am a very independent woman but whenever I go shopping at the supermarket I have to ask for help to reach the top shelf.

"Getting this chair will make a huge difference to me - I like to do things for myself and this will enable me to do so.

"I have used a manual chair since I was about 20 years old and am used to pushing myself around. But I have two children to look after and it's not easy chasing my son around. He's full of energy and wants to do really adventurous things - if I had an electric chair I might just be able to keep up with him!"

Allan, of Manse Road, Burley in Wharfedale, said: "This is a great opportunity for someone to set me a fun challenge. Life has been good to me and now I want to help other people. Make it as crazy or as wacky as possible - I'm open to anything."
