Two injured in football teams punch-up

TWO men were assaulted during a brawl between rival football teams.

Police are appealing for witnesses to the attacks in Corn Street, Witney, at about 2am on Sunday.

One of the men suffered minor injuries after he was assaulted outside USA Fried Chicken.

The second man was knocked unconscious outside the Red Lion pub.

Police said they were investigating whether the incidents were linked.

The men, both in their 20s and Polish, had been at a function with members of their football team, which plays in the Witney and District League.

Pc Andy Ball said: “Police were alerted to the incident by CCTV operators, but once we arrived at the scene the attackers had gone.

“One of the men received minor injuries, but the other was more serious and the man was actually knocked unconscious.

“We believe the attacks may be related to the fact both men play for a local team and that their attackers play for rival teams. We are going over the CCTV footage now, but would still like to hear from anyone that witnessed the assaults.

“As a town that runs a Nightsafe scheme, which was set up to tackle alcohol-related antisocial behaviour, anyone who takes part in activity like this risks being banned from all the participating bars, pubs and clubs in the town.”

Anyone with information should contact police on 08458 505505 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555111.
