24-hour walk will help raise £50,000 for hospice

WALKERS are being asked to spend a day on their feet to help raise £50,000 for children’s hospice Helen and Douglas House.

Focus Independent Financial Advisers and Insurance Consultants, based in Oxford, has launched a new event for the charity, and is trying to get as many teams from Oxfordshire businesses as possible to sign up.

Teams will be challenged to take part in a 24-hour walk, starting and finishing at Cornbury Park, near Charlbury, on Saturday, June 26, and Sunday, June 27.

The walk will cover 50 miles via the footpaths and bridleways of Oxfordshire.

Each team will be expected to raise a minimum of £1,000 for the pioneering East Oxford hospice, and the company is hoping to recruit at least 50 teams to take part.

Nick Walker, from Focus, said: “We hope that businesses from all over Oxfordshire will join us in support of this great cause, and help us raise a minimum of £50,000.” The event was suggested by Focus partner Nick Jones, who personally raised £3,200 for Helen and Douglas House by taking part in a range of sporting events, including the London Marathon, last year.

His sister, Alexandra, died of cancer 20 years ago, when she was six.

Mr Jones said: “We have had a number of promises from people who say they will put teams in for the challenge.

“I actually think that 50 is on the conservative side.”

If the challenge raised £50,000, it would pay for a nurse and a care team member for the hospice for a year.
