Wildcat post strike ends

MORE than 100 postmen returned to work at delivery offices in Witney and Carterton on Wednesday of last week following two wildcat strikes. An agreement was reached between Royal Mail and the Communication Workers Union.

Thousands of items of post built up when Carterton workers walked out the previous Thursday, followed by Witney postmen on the Friday.

Both workforces took the unofficial action over separate disputes involving managers and individual staff members.

Bob Cullen, Oxfordshire CWU representative based at Cowley, Oxford, said workers "reluctantly" returned to work after Royal Mail said it would investigate allegations against the managers.

Royal Mail spokesman Richard Hall said: "Royal Mail has a proven record of treating its employees with the utmost respect and both cases at the centre of this dispute have been handled in accordance with the procedures agreed with the CWU."
