Headteacher's backlash

Oxfordshire headteacher Mike Curtis criticised chief inspector of schools Sir Michael Wilshaw at the National Association of Headteachers at its annual conference.

Mr Curtis, from the Oxfordshire branch of the association, yesterday proposed a motion that the conference was “saddened and angered” by his approach and “negative rhetoric” which was creating a culture of fear in schools.

The NAHT voted 98.9 per cent in favour of the motion at its Harrogate conference.

I was worried about the competence of Michael Wilshaw when I heard him in a Newsnight interview lament the fact that in English 1 in 5 children failed to reach the national average. It wasn't a slip of the tongue - he repeated the point apparently unaware of its absurdity!

He also showed a capacity to misunderstand questions and to clumsily evade questions that he couldn't or wouldn't answer.

It takes quite a lot to rile headteachers, but Sir Michael certainly seems to have succeeded. Broken promises, clumsy politicking, petulance and posturing on his part have been met with real anger and scorn by normally rather restrained heads. He needs to step back and take a deep breath. This is about children's futures, which he is jeopardising by alienating those whose support he needs to get the best out of schools.
