Brookes detects difference in applications

OXFORD Brookes entered clearing for the first time in six years despite many Oxfordshire schools reporting no change in the number of students applying to university. It had 24 staff taking more than 4,000 calls yesterday, with thousands more expected in the next few days.
Pro vice-chancellor John Raftery said the lack of filled places averaged one or two on each of the university’s 130 courses, citing the £9,000 fees and changes in government rules on admissions.
He said: “The whole process has been quite tricky. What we have noticed is that during the year, when we have made offers, the number of non-acceptances has gone up.
People are making decisions later, they are being more cautious and they are worried.
We put offers out there but not as many people accepted them.”
Prof Raftery said total applications, which stood at 28,182 this year, had not changed, with an estimated eight students chasing each place.
