Sir - With all the recent news regarding flooding locally and nationally, I thought the people of Witney would be interested to know of the hughe area of rainwater that collects at Springfield Oval, in Witney.

This happens every time we have rainfall such as the weekend of Saturday, March 15. Luckily, a house has not yet flooded, but I'm sure that if this problem is not addressed by Oxfordshire County Council highways department, some houses on Springfield Oval without doubt will become another insurance statistic, to add to the others.

By 6pm on Sunday evening, which was quite some time after the rain had stopped, the area was still flooded up to the kerb. The drain was either blocked or not sufficent to cope with the rainwater that drained from one end of the Oval to the other. I know a number of local residents have contacted the county council on a number of occasions with their concerns, and occasionally someone from the department comes out and pokes about the drain - then goes again. As it was at its worst on Sunday, March 17, at least we did not have to contend with the Witney circular bus going through it and washing the water on to people's drives and in some cases up to the doorstep.

The Environment Agency has said that substantial rainfall will become more regular, so could the county council take action now? As we know, prevention is better than the cure. Will some houses have to flood before any action is taken?
