Kent Police has issued a warning about the dangers of driving during heavy rainfall, with more forecast to fall across South London this morning and afternoon.

The Met Office says that we are in for a lot of rain today and with the rain that came down on Monday, there is a lot of residual surface water on the roads.

Losing control of a vehicle when there is standing water on the roads is easier than you think and you can lose the steering traction in seconds.

Here is Kent Police’s advice:

Reduce your speed and leave more space between you and the vehicle in front as stopping distances in rain are increased.

Look out for large or fast moving vehicles creating spay which reduces visibility.

Listen for local news bulletins to keep up to date with road closures, flooding and forecast.

If you break down in torrential rain keep the bonnet closed while waiting for help to arrive to avoid the electrical system getting soaked.

Driving too fast through standing water could lead to tyres losing contact with the world. If your steering feel slight you could be aquaplaning. To retain grip ease off the accelerator, do not brake, and allow your speed to reduce until you gain full control of steering again.

Be considerate to other road users and try not to spray pedestrians and cyclists as you drive through the water.

Please be careful if driving on the motorway, driving too fast can cause mass destruction so please stay vigilant.
