CORN Street in Witney will receive a much-needed resurfacing next year.

Oxfordshire County Council has been conducting a survey of the road to check the location of utility pipes beneath the carriageway.

The details of the work, including when it will start and how long it will take, have not yet been planned.

However, the site survey has been carried out between Market Square and Cooper Mews, meaning it is likely the project will take weeks.

During this time, traders and residents along the road are almost certainly going to face difficulties.

The road is one of the main access routes into the town. It has dozens of restaurants, pubs and shops along it and already has few parking spaces.

It is also not long since the county council resurfaced the pavement along Corn Street and worked on pedestrian crossing points along the stretch.

But all those we spoke to agreed that, although it will be a pain, the work is necessary.

Some described the surface as “shot to bits” while others said there is scarcely a week that goes by without someone fixing a pothole along the road.

Corn Street’s surface is a mess and not only is it an embarrassment when tourists visit but is, frankly, dangerous for cyclists.

We absolutely welcome the work but we would like to see the county council consult with businesses and residents along the road.

The council needs to bring them on board and work with them so that the project causes the minimum disruption.

But it will be great to see the project completed and Corn Street match other recently revamped areas.

The Market Square, Corn Street pavements and the bollards along Church Green have all recently been revamped and all look great.

We hope they all add to the town centre and make it an even more inviting place for visitors.
