Contradictions over post office

Sir – Labour councillors Andrew Coles and Duncan Enright rightly object to the planned closure of the post office in Market Square, Witney (Gazette Letters, February 27) and I am delighted that they plan to campaign against the move.

But do they not understand the contradiction here, in that this and earlier closures of sub-post offices in Witney, are a direct result of European Union directives supported by their party when in office.

These required that post office subsidies should be phased out so that the bulk of the Post Office’s profitable business would be surrendered to private corporations.

The best thing would be for the Post Office to be renationalised to stop this sort of nonsense.
