Solutions to taxi rank issue

Sir – A lot of time-wasting argument seems to have taken place over many years regarding providing more spaces for taxis in Witney (Gazette, March 6).

Since the Market Square is the traditional place for taxis in Witney, it would make sense to somehow extend the same area rather than adding spaces for three extra taxis half-a-mile away at Marriotts Walk, where it will take time for the idea to become general knowledge.

Even so, some spaces at Marriotts Walk would be better than nothing and would help, even if the current rank is extended where it is.

An obvious solution would be to utilise the central reservation parking area, together with the parking outside the Angel Inn, where it is comparatively safe for pedestrians to cross the road and get into a taxi. This is also very central and butts on to the current area of Market Square.

Even so, the Market Square rank could be extended to outside Sandwich de Witney and further up.

Just as taxis make way for the hamburger stall and flower van to exit and enter when necessary, taxis could easily make way for the occasional delivery van to use the rank when necessary or essential.

The police and ambulance service use the rank when necessary.

The disabled already use their motorised vehicles on the public pavements all over Witney. Most of the public are not disabled.
