Earlys treated customers to lunch at Old Swan
10:00am Wednesday 23rd October 2013 in Letters
Sir – By a circuitous route, I have received a picture from the Witney Gazette (September 18) in which I am seen pulling the first pint in the then new bar at the Old Swan, Minster Lovell, in 1979.
Although I am referred to as the customer, the real customer was Earlys of Witney and, as a director, I was representing the company.
In those days, we welcomed about 300 of our blanket customers to Witney Mill each year, and if they had time and especially if they had come a long way, we would take them out to lunch at the Old Swan.
Just to keep the record straight, I probably went to fewer than 40 of those lunches each year.
I worked for Earlys from 1961 to 1986 and after nearly 56 years, am still working in the household textile industry and have no intention of retiring yet.
Incidentally, I have one or two items that may be of interest to the Witney Museum and intend to contact them in the new year.
