Sir – With Remembrance Sunday still fresh in our minds, I was appalled to learn that David Cameron, our Conservative Member of Parliament and Prime Minister, fully supports legislation proposed by his Government that will, in effect, silence the Royal British Legion as a campaigning organisation.

Since its incorporation in 1921, the Legion has been the United Kingdom's leading service charity providing care and support to serving members of the armed forces, veterans of all ages and their families.

Under an Act of Parliament that the Government is currently forcing through Parliament, the Royal British Legion will find it almost impossible to campaign politically and will probably be silenced by this legislation.

Worse still, Mr Cameron is actively trying to destroy, through this legislation, the democratic freedoms that my father and mother fought to protect during the Second World War and both my grandfathers during the First.

All the struggles and agonies suffered by countless generations to create ours as a democratic nation will count for nothing and the right to organised freedom of expression will be severely impaired, if not destroyed, because any organisation that his Government deems to campaign politically will find itself effectively gagged.

All this will be simply achieved by the passing of part two of the Transparency in Lobbying, Non-Party Campaigning, and Trade Union Administration Bill.

Anybody who cares for our democratic rights will fight for the destruction of this legislation. What sort of man have we elected to be our Member of Parliament?
