Sir – May I sympathise with your correspondent, Mr R Lee, regarding the proposal to build 270 homes off Burford Road.

Mr Lee's letter (last week’s Gazette) expresses many of the arguments that have been repeatedly raised regarding more large-scale housing developments in Witney, Carterton, Bampton and surrounding areas.

Surely, in the interests of sustainability, we must build houses closer to where people work.

Projections from the recent strategic housing assessment and other published data project large-scale growth in employment in science parks close to Oxford and on the A34 corridor. This is where the new houses need to be built.

West Oxfordshire remains a rural area and unless there is a sudden revival of the wool industry, or the Chinese invest in a blanket factory, local jobs will remain scarce.

Forcing more and more commuter traffic on the already gridlocked A40 is simply not an answer.
