Sir – Justine Garbutt’s letter (Make sure you have a say on housing plans, Gazette, May 7), makes many valid points on the proposal for a 1,000-homes scheme at Carterton West.

Your editorial (April 23) was spot on when it said that critical decisions on major housing developments in Oxfordshire should not be rushed.

Crest Nicholson is asking our district council to make up its mind on this proposal by June 6.

It is ridiculous, as the paperwork for this vast housing estate is a colossal volume.

Many aspects of this development, such as traffic, flooding and loss of open countryside need proper consideration.

These matters will take months of proper investigation by the district council’s planning officers.

Many Carterton residents are particularly worried about the implications for traffic.

Justine Garbutt states that the developer’s submission clarifies that Carterton West would increase daily traffic in Alvescot Road from 3,400 vehicles each way up to 8,400.

Traffic figures also reveal that on Upavon Way total daily vehicles now (north/south) are 2,384/2,295 and by 2030, with the development, it will be 5,627/5,753.

The area of Shill Brook around the site floods and the Shill Brook is often a lake, rather than a stream, in the winter-time, as those of us who overlook it are aware.

Many existing residents off Upavon Way and other areas of the town did not receive a leaflet advertising the consultation event at the end of February and beginning of March.

There is still plenty of time to write to the council objecting to this application since it will be months before it is determined.
