Sir – Thank you for your article entitled “Blanket coverage” in last week’s Gazette about the booklet The Story of Witney Blankets published by the Rotary Club of Witney to mark our 60th anniversary.

In this article you say that I have written the booklet. Would that I had the knowledge and literary skills to be that person. Sadly, you are in error.

Yes, I am this year’s President of the Rotary Club of Witney but the author of the booklet is another Rotarian, Keith Crawford.

Keith is a direct descendant of the Early family of blanket-makers and worked for 14 years for Earlys of Witney at their mill in Mill Street.

They were the last company to make blankets in Witney and closed in 2002.

The booklet is proving extremely popular but I do hope that local primary schools who have not yet taken up our offer of free copies for all year five and six pupils will be in touch with us soon.

Mike Alexander, President, Rotary Club of Witney
