Sir – Stuart MacDonald (Gazette Letters, December 24th) thinks Duncan Enright is claiming to be able to solve the A40 problem single-handed.

Having read Duncan Enright’s letter (and your article headline ‘West Oxfordshire pupils put politics into action to tackle A40 congestion’ (Gazette, December 3), I think nothing is further from the truth.

Mr MacDonald is correct saying it has been a problem for decades. Who has been in charge of Oxfordshire and West Oxfordshire for decades? The Conservatives.

We hear nothing from our current MP on any plan to reduce congestion on the A40 or improve the economic growth of West Oxfordshire.

For too long the Conservatives have had it easy within West Oxfordshire and Oxfordshire as a whole, as they have not had any meaningful political challenge.

Duncan Enright, since being elected to the town and district councils, is changing this status quo and providing the challenge to the Conservatives that is so desperately needed.

In his letter, Mr Enright is urging us to listen to the ideas the school pupils came up with to “reduce demand, increase capacity and provide alternatives to the commute thousands dread every day”.

The current administration has shown that they do not have a plan to put into action.

When they do have a plan, they ignore responses to consultation and push ahead with wrong solutions, such as the Cogges Link Road, proven by a public inquiry to be the wrong option.

We need more people like Duncan Enright to challenge the monopoly of the Conservatives. People who listen to the electorate and come up with plans that people support.
