Sir – As a member of the Ramblers Association, I was asked to contact all the candidates standing in Witney for the General Election, to find out if they will support the creation of a “Walking Britain” in the next Parliament.

There were also questions about the candidates’ own love of walking, recognition of the health benefits, and support for improved access to the outdoors.

David Cameron replied mentioning Government policies that have recognised the importance of walking and its health benefits, and also referred to a local pathway that his family enjoys.

Duncan Enright, Labour, wrote of his family’s enjoyment of walking and cycling, the work he has done as a local councillor to encourage these, and reminded me that the last Labour government secured the “right to roam”.

Andy Graham, Liberal Democrat, briefly expressed his support and promised to write more fully later, since he is away.

No one else replied. Surely the Green Party should be supporting access to the countryside and the health benefits of walking?
