Sir – I feel I must comment on an article on Fossil Free Oxfordshire (Gazette, March 4), which I find most disturbing.

The group is probably part of the current green zealot brigade, who do not welcome an alternative point of view and are influenced by biased media coverage by the BBC, in particular, who have advised their reporters that they do not have to consider a balanced alternative viewpoint, or organisations like the IPCC, which has frequently published misleading and inaccurate information regarding CO2 emissions.

Global warming has been shown to be a myth and mathematical calculations have indicated that there has been less than one degree temperature rise in the past 130 years.

There has also been virtually no temperature increase for the past 18 years.

With regard to climate change the planet is dynamic and this has taken place since the formation of the earth over millions of years.

This explains why there has been an ice age and a medieval warm period.

The case for blaming the use of fossil fuels for either global warming or climate change, is unproven and does not take into account changes to the earth orbit, solar activity or variances on the earth's axis.

The plain fact is gas is the cleanest of the fossil fuels used by millions of homes, extensively used by industry and commerce and will be required for at least 50 years and maybe longer.

Bearing in mind that we are sitting on the potentially vast quantities of gas and oil beneath our feet, which could stabilise fuel prices and make us immune from outside influences, it seems to me to be irresponsible not to try to explore the safe extraction of our own resources.

To try to shackle an authority and not invest in companies connected with fossil fuels, seems to me to be  against our country’s interest and I hope any authority gives due consideration to any opposing point of view, and not give in to Soviet-style diktats.
