Sir, You will remember the tub of lard, which occupied an empty seat on HIGNFY, when Roy Hattersley failed to show up. I wonder if we'll need something similar here in West Oxfordshire in the run up to May's General Election.

Following the unseemly bickering over the national televised debates, the TV companies now face a proper dog's breakfast - because No 10 seem afraid of a straight contest between the leaders of the four Major Parties which are Lib, Lab, Con and UKIP (as defined by media regulator OFCOM).

We hope this won't happen here, but it is hard to pin down whether our incumbent MP is prepared to face his local opponents at an open meeting. So, for the various hustings taking place across the constituency, we plan to fill that empty chair. In the spirit of kindness and compassion, perhaps a tub of lard is a little rude, maybe a carton of Waitrose Creme Fraiche (low calorie) would be a more suitable symbol.
