Sir – So councillor Bulmer thinks users of Oxfordshire County Council’s seven recycling centres should be charged for access to these facilities, in addition to their contribution through council tax, in order to avoid a reduction in the number of centres number from seven to possibly even as few as three.

He might benefit from examining how Wiltshire County Council manages to provide 11 such centres, open five days a week dependent on demand, and Buckinghamshire County Council runs 10 centres open seven days a week, both authorities having council tax levels broadly similar to ours in Oxfordshire.

What is Oxfordshire County Council doing wrong in how it manages its current number of centres? Oxfordshire manages to boast a good recycling record, which would no doubt be threatened should the number of centres be reduced.

The council’s anticipation that users would travel greater distances to recycle large volumes of various household items and waste, demonstrates naivety rather than faith.
