Sir – We live in a rural community where it is uneconomic to provide a bus service for all so we need convenient park-and-rides as far out of Oxford as possible – ie Carterton and Witney where, says Oxfordshire County Council, 70 per cent of the traffic comes from.

This would encourage and maximise public transport use.

The A40 should then be returned to a three-lane system as it was in the 1960s with ‘priority east’ into Oxford during the morning and ‘priority west’ in the afternoon effectively creating a “peak time dual carriageway”.

This has worked successfully in other cities for years and could provide a lower cost option before eventually dualling the road.

This would increase the capacity of the A40 and reduce rat-running through other areas including the A4095.

Finally, upgrades to the Woolvercote roundabout should be included to reduce the bottleneck at Oxford.
