Sir – I must congratulate Oxfordshire County Council on their A40 consultation presentation. Your readers must view it online if they haven’t seen it.

Until I visited the Methodist Hall exhibition I was very much in favour of dualling the A40. Now I can see much more sense in supporting the bus lane option. My family will tell you I am the last person to be seen on a bus, but the presentation is both clear and informative.

From OCC’s data 71 per cent of A40 traffic ends its journey in Oxford itself. If we dual the road drivers will certainly get to Wolvercote quicker, but then what? Park-and-ride perhaps?

Why not support the park and ride option at Shores Green, Witney and Cassington? With the 11-minute unrestricted journey time to Wolvercote roundabout it couldn’t be better. On to central Oxford or change buses to the Headington Hospitals etc.

The remaining 28 per cent of traffic travelling elsewhere would benefit from fewer A40 vehicles, and improved junctions at both the Wolvercote and the Banbury road roundabouts, now under construction, will smooth the onward journey flows.

With the budgets: bus lane £50m, dualling £120m, guided bus lane £165m, Oxford tramway £240m and reinstated train line £285m, it’s a no-brainer for a bus lane.

In addition, ‘green’ future transport technology is supported with grants from central Government and wholly electric buses could run on these routes. Bus lanes could be used for emergency vehicles and possibly other vehicles when needed. If the pressure continues into the future we could be like the Americans and allow car shares in this lane.

Mr Mills, presenting his views for the dualling in last week’s Gazette bemoans the time it’s taken for a decision and any subsequent build. This is my final reason for supporting the cheaper and quicker bus lane option!
