Sir – It comes to something when it falls to an undemocratic second chamber to kick the cruel and unfair tax credit cuts into the long grass.

The Conservative Government had again shown its true colours. The Conservative manifesto made no mention of their plans to cut tax credits, in fact David Cameron promised live on television that he wouldn’t cut tax credits.

His premiership will be judged by his smoke and mirrors attitude to misleading the people of our country.

He was elected on a promise to reduce the country’s debt and has inflicted terrible hardship on our most vulnerable while making apparently essential cuts.

But where are all the savings going? Certainly not on reducing the debt because we’re in much more debt now than when he came to power.

According to the Treasury’s own figures when he came to power Britain’s debt stood at £0.76 trillion. Our debt now stands at over £1.40 trillion. Nearly double what he inherited.

He also pledged to lead the greenest government ever but has in fact ditched his principles for fracking and cut the support to renewables when oil industry money landed in his lap.

He also accused Jeremy Corbyn of being a threat to national security but he is the one that has slashed funding to the police and reduced the size of our Army, Navy and Air Force, causing terrible anxiety to our brave servicemen and women.

May he hold his head in shame. The Lords have certainly done a good job in holding him to account.
