Sir – Is it just me, or was anyone bothered about the distinct lack of pubs and restaurants in Witney doing anything to mark our patron saint’s day?
Shame on all the hostelries that make an easy buck for St Patrick’s Day on the back of the big breweries’ promotions of Guinness, but which don’t bother to make any effort if it’s not given to them on a plate.
Some of the pubs I called to ask if they were doing anything special for St George’s day even asked me when it was.
Full marks to The Plough for marking it by offering free (yes free!) bangers and mash to all comers.
I will be thinking twice before I visit the less-patriotic hostelries of the town in future.
