Give others a chance

Sir – The recent tantrums experienced at Witney Town Council will gladden the heart of anyone who has craved a bit of interest on a body which, while efficient, desperately needs a spark of excitement.

The bloodless coup in the Conservative group will have provided casual observers with some much-needed passion, complete with the amusing spectacle of some of its longest-standing members throwing their toys out of the pram.

As Richard MacKenzie suggests (Witney Gazette, May 16), it is time for the old guard to briskly step aside and bring some new blood onto the council – and some new vitality to its committees.

The true-blue Tory faithful have served their town well, and deserve real credit for their support for their town and its people – most of whom (myself included) lack the energy and available time to commit anything like the effort they have dedicated to their communities. But if they are no longer being much use, as seems to be the case, isn’t it time for others to have a crack of the whip?

VIC SPEIGHT, Witney
