New episode of Link Road saga

Sir – I was amazed to learn (Witney Gazette , September 5) that, only a few weeks after the refusal of the Department for Transport to grant a compulsory purchase order, one of the main objectors to the Cogges Link Road , the Mawle Trust, is proposing to develop 450 houses on land that had been earmarked for the road.

It seems that some of the objections to the CLR – building on the flood plain and loss of public open space amenity – are conveniently no longer applicable. People will come to their own conclusions as to the motives and events surrounding the CLR saga.

For me, I feel we have been witnessing a soap opera, with the outcome being barely believable. Meanwhile, the traffic solution to ease congestion seems no nearer.

The plans for the houses were always part of their plan and were available on their website - all of the other objectors obviously didn't realise what was really going on - the mawle Trust's objections appear to be solely based on their desire to sell the land to developers at a higher price than for a road that would have helped with the congestion of the town's roads.
