A WITNEY town centre hall has been put up for sale after being valued at more than £750,000.

Langdale Hall, in Langdale Gate, is being marketed by commercial property and land development consultancy firm Meeson Williams Phillips.

The company has advertised the former drill hall, which was built in the 1920s, and said it would accept bids of more than £750,000.

Currently the building is used by Witney Town Council for social, community and corporate events.

Director at Meeson Williams Phillips, Mark Meeson said: “This is a rare development opportunity in the heart of Witney town centre.

“We have had pre-application discussions with the planners and they have confirmed that the buildings would be suitable for a variety of different uses.

“The ground floor could be converted to shops or a restaurant, for example, while the upper floors would make excellent offices or apartments.”

In 2011 the town council agreed to sell the hall to fund repairs needed to reopen the Corn Exchange in Market Square.

The Corn Exchange has been closed since November 2011, when a safety inspection uncovered serious safety problems.

Asbestos was found during further checks earlier this year.

It is hoped the sale of the Langdale Hall will cover phase two of the £400,000 development at the Corn Exchange.

A public meeting will take place on Monday, September 22, where both halls will be discussed.

The meeting, at Witney Town Hall starts at 6pm.
