TRAFFIC light sequencing at the Wendlebury interchange of the A34 and M40 is being blamed for huge delays across Oxfordshire tonight.

Drivers have reported journey times of two-and-a-half hours to get from Oxford city centre along the A34 to the motorway at junction 9, near Wendlebury.

There have even been reports of people getting out of their cars as the traffic has been at a standstill.

There are tailbacks stretching back 12 miles along the A34's northbound carriageway, from junction 9 to the Hinksey Hill interchange south of Oxford.

The A34 gridlock caused knock-on delays along the A417, the A423 Oxford Southern Bypass and A4142 Oxford Eastern Bypass.

Traffic trying to leave the M40 in both directions at junction 9 was also queuing, with the southbound carriageway at a crawl all the way back to junction 10 at Ardley.

Highways Agency spokesman Bernard Ibekwem told the Oxford Mail that there were issues with the traffic light sequencing at junction 9, where roadworks are taking place.

Thames Valley Police roads team confirmed it was on the scene and warned drivers to avoid the A34 northbound and M40 southbound near junction 9 due to severe congestion.
