ZORB balls, mud slides and a medieval-style catapult machine gave children plenty to do at a play day in Witney.

Youngsters were encouraged to take part in activities at The Leys recreation ground on Wednesday, in an event organised by Witney Town Council and Oxfordshire Play Association.

Thorney Leys resident Joanne Woodley took her children Callum, 10, and Bethany Hewer, seven. She said: “It was brilliant and they had a fantastic time, even though it was raining.

“There were hundreds of people, with the children all kitted out in their wellies.”

Bethany added: “I had a fantastic time in the zorb balls.”

Other activities included go karts, graffiti art, climbing walls, a bouncy castle and arts and crafts.

Youngsters also fired tennis balls from a 5ft by 3ft wooden trebuchet, which can fling objects up to 60ft.

It was donated to the council by timber merchant Olly Hill, who built it from scrap materials.
