Carterton North East: Three candidates to choose from

VOTERS in Carterton have three candidates to choose from - two with the same surname - in a delayed district council election.

When nominations for the Carterton North East ward closed at midday on May 30, the names in the hat were Norman Macrae (Conservative), David Wesson (Labour), and Paul Wesson (Independent).

The latter are not related.

Tory party member Harry Watts, who lost by just one vote in a neighbouring ward on May 3, withdrew his nomination after he was told that to stand now as an Independent against the official Conservative candidate would mean expulsion from the party.

The election was delayed from May 3 because of the sudden death just days before polling of former West Oxfordshire District Council chairman Keith Stone.

Voting is on June 21, with polling stations open from 7am to 10pm.

The result will have no influence on the balance of power, with the Tories holding a large majority on the 49-seat council.

There will also be elections for five seats in the Upavon ward of Carterton Town Council - these were also delayed because Mr Stone had been a declared candidate.

The list is: Adrian Coomber (Ind), Brian Crossland (Con), Bob Edwards (Ind), Norman Macrae (Con), Philip Scott (Con), Sheila Stone (Con), Michael Townsend (Ind), Val Townsend (Ind), Becky Wesson (Ind), and Paul Wesson (Ind).
