LEARNER drivers should not be alarmed if their instructor turns up for lessons tomorrow dressed in a onesie.

About 20 of the county's teachers will don the novelty outfits in memory of former driving instructor John Greenwell.

He was killed in a motorbike crash on the Isle of Man two years ago this month.

Stepdaughter Nicola Tinson, a driving instructor herself, arranged for colleagues to take part in the funday to raise funds for Help for Heroes, a charity close to his heart.

The 30-year-old from Witney said Mr Greenwell was "caring, loving and a great man", adding she thought it would be nice to raise money in his memory.

She added: "He was a big friendly giant. I'm a driving instructor and I thought it would be good to get lots of us together to raise money for a charity close to his heart.

"We do not really know how he died. We know he was with some friends and they became separated.

"I was very close to my stepdad. I didn't feel up to do it last year, but this year I thought I would do something. I thought it would be good fun to do it in onesies or pyjamas."

The driving instructors are hoping to raise up to £2,000 for the charity, which aims to help British servicemen and women who have been wounded or injured in the line of duty.

Mr Greenwell, a 58-year-old grandfather from Eynsham, was pronounced dead at the scene on the Creg Ny Baa two years ago.

The former Formula 1 mechanic was riding a new Kawasaki zx14R and is thought to have lost control.

Ms Tinson's stepbrother and Mr Greenwell's son Johnny said in tribute at the time: "He went in style doing what he loved."

The family man ran the John Greenwell School of Motoring in Oxford for eight years before his death.

He was born in Croydon, London, and worked as a mechanic in Formula 1 for McLaren, Tyrrell and Jackie Stewart’s Stewart Grand Prix team, for the Banbury-based ProDrive rally team and in Moto GP motorbike racing.

As a Formula 1 mechanic he worked in pits at grand prix across the world and enjoyed flying planes at Enstone Flying Club.
