HUNDREDS of people attended the unveiling of a memorial paving stone to commemorate one of Oxford’s most famous war heroes.
The tribute to WWI Victoria Cross hero Edward Brooks was unveiled in the village of his birth, Oakley, in Bucks, by his grandson and Horspath resident Keith Brooks today.
Mr Brooks, who was joined in the task by the Lord Lieutenant of Buckinghamshire Sir Henry Aubrey-Fletcher, said it was a great tribute to his grandfather.
He said: “It was very good – we couldn’t have wished for anything better.
“There was a very good showing and everybody seemed to enjoy it.”
The ceremony organised by a village committee was accompanied by an exhibition about Edward Brooks’ life which continues tomorrow at Oakley Village Hall.
Mr Brooks said he would be attending the ongoing celebrations tomorrow which include a flyast schedules for 2pm.
Edward Brooks, who lived in Oxford most of his life, earned his VC on April 28, 1917, by capturing a Germany machine gun.
