A40 to shut for vital A34 viaduct work

THE A40 will be shut for nine hours this weekend as work on the £44.4m replacement scheme for the Wolvercote Viaduct enters a critical phase.

The road will be closed from the Wolvercote roundabout to Cassington from 10pm on Saturday until 7am on Sunday so steel beams to support the new northbound carriageway of the A34 can be moved into place.

The cycle lanes and footpaths adjacent to the A40 will also be closed.

A diversion route will be fully signposted and will take traffic travelling west from Oxford to Cheltenham via the A34 southbound to Botley, then the A420 to the B4044 to Eynsham and via the B4449 northbound on to the A40.

Those travelling on the A40 towards Oxford will be diverted in the opposite direction.

The works come two weeks after the whole of the deck of the new northbound carriageway was completed.

The Highways Agency is replacing the current viaduct built in 1960-61, to make sure it remains safe and meets design standards.

The new northbound carriageway is set to be completed in October.

Work will then begin to demolish the southbound viaduct and construct new foundations and piers, with the entire project set to be finished by June next year.
