Huge mystery boom heard over county - big bang theory!

POLICE have been inundated with calls about loud bang, believed to be a series of sonic booms.

Fire crews are also investigating the source of the noise and Oxfordshire Fire and Rescue are liaising with neighbouring counties.

Thames Valley Police duty inspector Phil Rogers said people have reported the noise, from Chipping Norton, Burford, Banbury and North Newington, right out to Swindon and Warwick.

He said: “There have been no reports of any casualties or damage.

“We believe it could be a sonic boom from a supersonic aircraft.”

He added that he believed it to be more than a single incident as the reports were so far spread.

Some have reported the noise was so loud it ‘shook their house’.

I too live in Carterton- heard it and felt it- house shaking! If it was a sonic boom- wish they'd warn people so they wouldn't panic!

In Witney, heard what I thought was thunder followed by aeroplane noise so realised probably just the usual from Brize Norton but glad it wasn't in the night!

Earthquakes in Britain are not unheard of. Considering it was felt as far as coventry and rugby suggests that an earthquake is exactly what it was. It would have to be a ridiculously big aircraft to cause that much of a sonic boom. Either way its certainly nothing to panic about. Unfortunately common sense seems to be missing from this report.

i lived in north cornwall years ago. concorde flew in from usa every day at about 5.25pm you could hear/feel the sonic boom from her when she was still over the irish sea. a good 200miles out. no supersonic flying is actually allowed over land due to damage to buildings and windows. but sometimes raf etc break the rules coz they might have to for training purposes. what with russia and korea posing a very real threat nowadays to our air space.

i fully agree i looked on face book after my friend said she heard it and thats where people are saying it was a bomb and other rubbish, really get a grip .... did not know it was heard in coventry as well as you say kind of blows the sonic boom idea out the window,

the sky over moreton is alive with military planes. im an aircraft enthusiast and today there were. usaf F15's high up, an raf a330mrtt low level. gr4 tornado and two eurofighter typhoons buzzing about. all gone now. left about an hour ago. but the boom happened when they were flying about. must be some exercise today.

We heard it in warwickshire (near southam). I was looking out of the window at the time & every bird shot straight up in the air. We thought it was a gas explosion, it rattled everything. Friends online heard it in Rugby, Leamington & Coventry.

There was weird stuff going on over Bath an hour ago. Jet fighters all over the place and then I noticed this thing hovering very high in the sky. Full set of pics for you to zoom in on and speculate. The object seemed to be drifting and then got covered by cloud. The jets were definetely interested in it though.

I think it's Quite Funny if a Helicopter needed Assistance... Do they Normally Dispatch not just 1 but 2 Typhoons ? for a Possible Downed helicopter ? or was the Helicopter interacting maybe with something.. ? ?, if so then i did'nt know Typhoons were Vertical take off and landing Craft lol, also thats a lot of hardware for a helicopter needing assistance, Can typhoons Hover ? lol :D, and last,Did the Helicopter come across something "other worldly" ? if so "Who care's" ?.. Grow up maybe, would be nice to know were not alone ! or is that wishful thinking :/ lol
