Cameron recalls ‘biblical floods’

TORY leader David Cameron said he would never forget the "biblical scenes" of homes and cars being flooded in his west Oxfordshire constituency.

The MP for Witney said communities were scared of a repeat of the floods that devastated parts of the county in July last year.

He told MPs 1,633 west Oxfordshire homes were flooded internally and many more gardens and garages were submerged.

In Witney itself, the water came "right up the High Street", while 55 villages were flooded, some "incredibly severely", with water levels rising 6ft and leaving residents "very frightened".

About 150 people were taken to rest centres as the county experienced its largest daily rainfall in 40 years.

Mr Cameron said: "I don't think I will ever forget the biblical scenes of the scale of the floods.

"People in my constituency want to know that everything that can be done will be done - and they're not satisfied that everything is being done."

Environment minister Phil Woolas insisted money was being spent and action taken in west Oxfordshire.
