TRADE was estimated to be 30 per cent up at Carterton market on its first day in the centre of the town.
Stall holders said many more people came to the market last Thursday, after it moved to Black Bourton Road. Kevin Hurdman, who runs a confectionery stall in the market, said: "It went very well, there was a vibrant atmosphere, it was brilliant. I'm sure it brought more people into the town. I'd say we had a 30 per cent upturn in trade. The old site was scruffy, dirty, and horrible. This is so much better.
"We had a lot more customers despite the awful windy weather."
The town cryer for the day, Mike Bully, rounded up shoppers, and mulled wine and mince pies were served by the Carterton Lions Club.
The mayor of Carterton, Phil Scott, handed over a charter to the traders, allowing them to set up their stalls from the northern end of the road.
The market will be held in Black Bourton Road for a six-month trial period.
