2:53pm Monday 11th December 2006 in Witney By Rosalind Miles
A CHARITY rock and rock and roll night in Witney raised £567 for Oxfordshire Mind.
Event organiser, Nicky Clargo from Oxfordshire Mind, said: "I would like to thank Reg and Cathy Neale for allowing us to use the Palace Night Club to host the event, and The Hell Cats and Every Hippies Dream, who put on a spectacular night.
"Everyone had a great time, and several people came in fantastic costumes, including Teddy Boys and Girls and Hippies."
Posters advertising the event, held on Friday, December 1, were taken down by the district council, because they gave free advertising to The Palace.
Ms Clargo said: "This seems really unfair if the venue gives you their premises for free, and allows you to keep all of the door takings. I shall be writing a letter to the council to ask for this to be reviewed, as I feel that if someone is prepared to help a charity, they should be able to receive a little free advertising for their kindness and generosity.
"I also feel that the council should support local businessmen and women, not deter them from doing charitable work. It's not as if we run weekly events - we only run charity nights about three to four times a year."
Mental health charity Oxfordshire Mind raises £50,000 each year to keep its services going.
