A RESIDENT escaped from his smoke-filled home after leaving food unattended on an oven.
Ten firefighters were called to the house in Taphouse Avenue, Witney, at 11.20pm last night.
Fire crews searched the home because they thought the owner was still inside but he had managed to leave before firefighters arrived and was not injured.
A spokesman for Oxfordshire Fire Service said cooking fires were responsible for the largest proportion of all fires in the homes.
He praised neighbours who raised the alarm and said their quick action may have saved the person's life.
