Knights battle it out at palace

A DIFFERENT period of history is being revived at Blenheim Palace this weekend with a clash of arms in medieval style.

The grand monument to 18th-century military commander, John Churchill, and home of his famous descendant Sir Winston Churchill becomes the playground for jousting knights hurtling on horseback across the turf, lances at the ready.

The three-day tournament, which started today, is recreating the contest that took place at Earls Court in 1912, originally organised by Jennie Churchill, the mother of Sir Winston.

Hannah Payne, Blenheim spokesman, said: "At that time, jousting was the height of Victorian extravagance. Knights fought to prove their bravery and skill, to relive the medieval codes of chivalry and honour, and of course, to impress the ladies.

"Set on the South Lawn, the palace provides a magnificent backdrop to the tournament."

Trumpeters herald the start of the tournament, followed by a parade of the Knight Marshall of the lists, the Judges and the Ladies of the Court.

The tournament is also taking place on Saturday and Sunday each day between noon and 2.30 pm.

The mock medieval theme also includes falconry displays with birds of prey and the "Travelling Tall Tale Tinkers" providing stories and music.
